What Usually Causes Block Paving to Sink?

Four causes are most common: an under-specified sub-base, poor original compaction, localised ground movement, or water ingress beneath the surface. Here is how to tell them apart.

Under-Specified Sub-Base

A sub-base that was too shallow, or built from the wrong material for the ground conditions, can compress unevenly over time as it carries repeated vehicle loading.

This is often a legacy of an older driveway built before current sub-base standards, or one that was built quickly without proper assessment of the ground beneath it.

Poor Original Compaction

If the sub-base was not compacted thoroughly enough when it was first built, it can continue settling gradually for years afterwards as traffic slowly compresses it further.

This kind of settlement is often slow and even at first, before becoming more noticeable as a dip once it has progressed far enough.

Localised Ground Movement

Tree roots, nearby excavation work, or naturally soft ground can cause one specific area to settle more than the rest of the driveway around it.

This tends to produce a more sudden or localised dip, rather than the gradual, even settlement typical of a sub-base compaction issue.

Water Ingress Beneath the Surface

Water getting into the sub-base, often linked to a drainage problem elsewhere, can wash out fine material from within the sub-base and cause it to settle.

How Do You Repair Sunken Block Paving?

Once the underlying issue is corrected, suitable existing blocks are lifted, cleaned and re-laid to the correct level, matching the surrounding driveway as closely as possible.

A single dip near a drive entrance is often a localised repair, while settlement across a larger area can point to a wider sub-base issue. In that case, a broader assessment makes more sense than patching one spot.

What Should I Do If I Notice a Dip Starting to Form?

Get it assessed sooner rather than later, since a small dip is usually easier and cheaper to correct than one that has been left to worsen.

A dip that is left can continue settling, become a more noticeable trip hazard, or allow water to collect and cause further issues beneath the surface.
